knitting pattern

DH spent the weekend making bamboo flutes with the guys.  He deserved a break from diaper duty.

My mother, a lifelong flute plater, says his flute sounds wonderful.  He is so proud.

dear boku,

it’s not you, it’s me.

actually, i take that back, it’s totally you.  first you didn’t cooperate with a scarf pattern, then you messed up my “around the world bag”, then to insult me, you totally destroyed Knitty’s beautiful foilage.  I know I really shouldn’t but I’m going to give you one more chance, then I swear I’m kicking you to the curb.  I mean it this time! I just hope all this tension and strain doesn’t break you.

love, me.

walk.

We took evie on her first long walk this weekend.  We took her in the stroller since it was such a long one and Daddy wanted to push her.

evie had her 2 week well baby today.  homebirth = earlier appts evidently.  she  still hasn’t gained her birth weight back (6lbs4ozs today down from 6lbs11oz) but her reflexes were fantastic.  Dr is not at all worried and says she’s so strong and active she may be burning calories faster than she is eating.  He wants me to nurse her only every two hours, no sooner.  Seems counterintuitive to me.  I’ll try it out I guess, but i’d rather feed her when she wants to eat.

Sorry for the messy typing. sometimes it’s hard with a nursing baby on y0ur lap!

In truth, this is just another chance to show of my Evie.

But since she came so early, everything I had made for her was way too big! I knit up a premie sized hat real fast. Even the store bought hats were too big.

hat side

Here’s the specs:

Pattern: Twinkle Premie Hat

Needles: size 4

Yarn: sorry, don’t know! A very thin soft yarn that matches one of the few NB outfits that fits her

Mods: Instead of 8 repeats, I only did 5 or 6, I know it says premie hat, but even with just these few repeats taken out it is still a little big.

She was a little camera shy today. Plus her skin is peeling and red still. Someday she will be pretty!

3636 weeks38

36…37…38 weeks

Isn’t that amazing, I can actually see getting bigger in such a small amount of time. Wow! I knew I felt bigger but, neat!

BTW, that tattoo? DH and I got matching celtic cross tattoos on our shoulders instead of engagment rings.

I got 2 hours of sleep last night. I got 3 hours the night before that. I’m exhausted! Thanks to my idiot roommate who for some reason has to do laundry and dishes at 2am. I mean, cmon! He doesn’t work, he goes to school for like…. 4 hours a day twice a week. He has all freakin day to do all this crap! So tired and this isn’t helping my migraine one bit.

5 more days! Contractions haven’t been as often as yesterday, but they are 25 or 30 seconds instead of 10. So possibly we’re getting somewhere. I hope these are productive, if not it’s a lot of pain and lack of sleep for nothing. I do notice I have much less patience and snap at DH almost constantly. I dunno, it’s hard to stay positive and cheery under migraine/contraction/lack of sleep conditions.

Knitting Stuffs

My first project and what really got me started knitting again was this baby blanket. I usually knit in the winter, and it’s usually just one scarf. This year being put on modified bedrest seemed to spurn an intense interest in knitting. Until June I never knew how to do more than knit and purl on straight needles. Since then I’ve made socks, sweaters, toys… I’m a little impressed if I do say so myself.

blanket So Evie’s baby blanket, I started in March and finished in June. At the time we didn’t know if she was a he or she. I love orange! This reminds me of creamscicle ice cream bars. It is just a simple 5×5 basketweave.

boku
I have done so many baby things I wanted to do something for me! All the things I’ve made this year and absolutely nothing for me. I figure, I’m going to have a baby next week, lets treat myself! I’ve had some plymouth yarn Boku in #3 for a few months, I bought it because it was next to a beautiful hat the lys shop owner had made. Yesterday I decided I’d make a scarf. The pattern is Orca Tails and it is beautiful! However, that said, there is absolutely no way I could wear this scarf. My redheaded Irish skin just won’t handle that itch. My hands can barely stand it. I like the stripes and the fall colors but wow! I’ve also heard of people having problems with it breaking but I haven’t had that as of yet. I may be a loose knitter?

Instead I think I will take on my first felting pattern and make myself a “what goes around bag“. I admit that it’s possibly I was swayed by the Beatles posing next to the bag. But either way, it’s a pattern I think I can do, has little if any seaming and I have enough yardage for it.

layette

This is my weekend of knitting.

Yarn for Layette: Bernat Baby Softee.  There’s nothing wrong with this yarn, I just don’t particularly like the colors.  I wish they had had a better selection. Yarn for Toy:  I dont know, a thick chunky cheap acrylic type yarn.

booties

Pattern: Two Needle Cable Baby Booties were simple to make.  As much as I hate seaming this was super easy and they’re cute.

 Needles: US size 6 straights

Mods: none

A close-up of the cable and the eyelets.  I used a cheap pink ribbon to tie it together.

hat

Pattern: Spiral Rib Hat

Needles:  Number 6 circs

Mods: I cut out a repeat of the first 18 rows.  I wanted it to fit a newborn.

PatternBaby’s Thumbless Mittens

Needles: size2 dpns

Mods: added the pink ribbon

notalien

My very first knit toy!

PatternAlien

Needles: size 7 dpns

Mods:  First off I accidently embroidered the face onto the body.  Oops.

head of notalien

It was my first time embroidering really, it came out funky but alright.  Here he is posing in front of our Cowboy Bebop wallscroll.

So since I had to make the face a body I added a few more rows of KFB and twice the rows of straight knitting.  Also I accidently turned him inside out and left it that way after  the embroidery so his body is WS!

I have to say, this was another super easy pattern, no seaming which is a mega-plus in my book.  Check out all of her patterns, they are so cute and simple.

DH really wanted me to add bunny ears but I like the way he looks armless and legless.  So I made him a scarf out of leftover Vanna’s Choice chocolate and mustard.  I think a hat may be in order as well.

I stuffed him with leftover scraps of yarn, which worked much better than I thought it would.  I’m going to start two more today, for my boys.  I want to have a present for them when they come visit me and their new sister in the hospital.

I’m done.

37 weeks tomorrow and until… last Friday or so I was coping.  But 4 days straight of what is probably the worst migraine ever, restless legs, incredibly swollen feet, unable to sleep, peeing every 20 minutes… etcetcetc… I’m just miserable.  More than miserable really.

Are you tired of hearing about my migraines?  I know poor DH is.  It’s nothing new for me to have migraines; I’ve had  them since I was 13 or 14.   But not daily!

I have done everything I can for this one.  My next stop will have to be the ER for another shot.  What fun.  So I’m killing time, waiting to see if DH can get some time off work to drive me up the hill to the ER.  I may break down and have my roommate take me, but I really really don’t want to do that.  I don’t really care much for him and being stuck in the car with him for an hour with a migraine sounds miserable.

Evie needs to be born so I can take my migraine medicine.  I don’t know how much longer I can deal with all this.  3 weeks I guess, right?  A few days ago that didn’t seem so long.  I know I’m not the only pregnant woman with migraines.  How the hell do you deal with this?  You’d think the third time around I’d have gotten a grasp on this.  It just gets worse each time.

I can’t lay down and rest or the restless legs really act up.  It’s almost tolerable if I’m sitting up.  I’d love to lay down and rest my poor head but I can’t.  So I started knitting this seamless yoke cardigan.  Ever seen someone miserable knitting?  I bet it looks fairly amusing.    It’s a fun pattern, not too difficult for a broken brain.  I’m using Debbie Bliss Cashmerino; the tiny stitches and very soft yarn gives me a very nice sense of accomplishment.

And it takes my mind off wanting to cut off my head.

I’ve been getting migraines for as long as I can remember.  At least the last 15 years.  But they’ve never been as often as during this pregnancy.  Evidently thats fairly common, what with all the hormones and such.  I get them daily.  Most times I can work around them and ignore them.  Saturday night I felt a great one coming.  By Sunday afternoon I was crosseyed and crying in pain.  When it gets bad my doctor sends me into the ER for a shot.  What shot depends on the doctor there at the time.  Some use Demerol, others Morphine, others still use Stadol.  Then there’s the anti-naseau shot, and that varies too.  Last night was a demerol/zofran combo.  Zofran is so much better than phenergan for me, phenergan sometimes induces restless legs and there isn’t much worse than doped up and restless legs.  You are almost asleep but for the restless legs.  It’s annoying and frustrating.

I don’t know why but this shot woke me up.  Almost hyper.  Yet still asleep.  To make matters worse I only got 3 or 4 hours sleep and my head is still killing me.  I think I slept less last night than normally.  With a shot!  Frustrating.  Maybe I’ll get some sleep today.  I still feel awful dopey and exhausted.  Plus the migraine.  Fun.

My 36 week appointment is tomorrow.  We’d talked about doing an ultrasound this week since the baby was measuring big at the last one and the boys were both almost 9 pounds 2 weeks early.  Between this and all these migraines I’m hoping we’ll induce in 2 weeks.  That would be perfectly ok with me.  More than ok.

Also I get to have a pedicure tomorrow.  It’s not something I normally do but at this point when I can barely see my feet, and knowing they are going to be up in stir-ups soon, I think it will be nice to have a flash of color.

Today is the boys’ first day at their new school.  They are super excited.  Andrew’s step-mom is his first grade teacher.  It will be interesting to see how that goes.  Zane is in 3rd grade and there are two other boys with glasses this year in his class.  He finds that very exciting.  I am very encouraged by the parents and students I’ve met so far.  After a fairly disasterous year at their old school, for both of them, I have high hopes this year.

In knitting news, I have been searching around for what to knit next.  I dunno if it was the migraine or lack of interest but I started and frogged 4 things this weekend.  A hat, a scarf, a sweater and… something else, possibly a different hat.  Since I’m not on my regular computer but the one in DH’s office/Evie’s nursery, I figured I’d save my searches and ideas here.  It might be helpful to anyone out there that has read this far as well.

I guess it’s fairly obvious I’m trying to do baby things before Evie gets here.  Also, I hate seaming.  With a passion.  I have some Debbie Bliss baby cashmerino (or some such) that I can’t wait to use.

Also, DH has mycrazyroomate.com bookmarked.  It’s funny, this guy hates his roommate as much as I hate mine.  His is just more amusing.

pinwheelfull

Pattern: Elann’s pinwheel sweater, kid-sized for Evie

Yarn: Vanna’s Choice in white, beige, chocolate, taupe, mustard, honey and rust.

Modifications: Quite a few actually. I didn’t do the provisional cast-on, I did a technique called “afterthought heel” in some circles. You can read about that here. I also changed the sleeves, Ending in a stockinette stitch instead of the ribbing, because I liked the way it looked on rippedoffknitter‘s sweater. I also castoff the sleeves with one row of beige. I thought it looked nice.

pinwheel arm1

What I learned: Also a lot! This was my first circular project so I got over my silly fear about those crazy circ needles. I learned how to adapt a pattern to knowledge I already had. I learned i-cording!

What I will do different next time: Not use 7 colors! It’s too busy for my tastes. I would like to do a nice purple/pink/grey next time around. If I ever make one for me instead of my unborn daughter, I would like to use the beige/chocolate/taupe. Maybe some rust too.

This really was a terrific project for instant gratification. You start out with a lovely pinwheel design and change colors often. It’s hard to be bored!

pinwheel

I started Monday August 13th around 6pm and finished Friday August 17th around 10pm. Of course I didn’t knit constantly and I’ve been extremely sick all week, but that’s a fast project. My husband didn’t put it down last night, he told me how proud of me he was and how great it looked and what an artist I am, etc. That’s a good feeling. I can’t wait for photos of Evie in her new jacket. I’m ready for her to be born!
