DH spent the weekend making bamboo flutes with the guys.  He deserved a break from diaper duty.

My mother, a lifelong flute plater, says his flute sounds wonderful.  He is so proud.

dear boku,

it’s not you, it’s me.

actually, i take that back, it’s totally you.  first you didn’t cooperate with a scarf pattern, then you messed up my “around the world bag”, then to insult me, you totally destroyed Knitty’s beautiful foilage.  I know I really shouldn’t but I’m going to give you one more chance, then I swear I’m kicking you to the curb.  I mean it this time! I just hope all this tension and strain doesn’t break you.

love, me.

We took evie on her first long walk this weekend.  We took her in the stroller since it was such a long one and Daddy wanted to push her.

evie had her 2 week well baby today.  homebirth = earlier appts evidently.  she  still hasn’t gained her birth weight back (6lbs4ozs today down from 6lbs11oz) but her reflexes were fantastic.  Dr is not at all worried and says she’s so strong and active she may be burning calories faster than she is eating.  He wants me to nurse her only every two hours, no sooner.  Seems counterintuitive to me.  I’ll try it out I guess, but i’d rather feed her when she wants to eat.

Sorry for the messy typing. sometimes it’s hard with a nursing baby on y0ur lap!

In truth, this is just another chance to show of my Evie.

But since she came so early, everything I had made for her was way too big! I knit up a premie sized hat real fast. Even the store bought hats were too big.

hat side

Here’s the specs:

Pattern: Twinkle Premie Hat

Needles: size 4

Yarn: sorry, don’t know! A very thin soft yarn that matches one of the few NB outfits that fits her

Mods: Instead of 8 repeats, I only did 5 or 6, I know it says premie hat, but even with just these few repeats taken out it is still a little big.

She was a little camera shy today. Plus her skin is peeling and red still. Someday she will be pretty!

This is my weekend of knitting.

Yarn for Layette: Bernat Baby Softee.  There’s nothing wrong with this yarn, I just don’t particularly like the colors.  I wish they had had a better selection. Yarn for Toy:  I dont know, a thick chunky cheap acrylic type yarn.

Pattern: Two Needle Cable Baby Booties were simple to make.  As much as I hate seaming this was super easy and they’re cute.

 Needles: US size 6 straights

Mods: none

A close-up of the cable and the eyelets.  I used a cheap pink ribbon to tie it together.

Pattern: Spiral Rib Hat

Needles:  Number 6 circs

Mods: I cut out a repeat of the first 18 rows.  I wanted it to fit a newborn.

PatternBaby’s Thumbless Mittens

Needles: size2 dpns

Mods: added the pink ribbon

My very first knit toy!

Needles: size 7 dpns

Mods:  First off I accidently embroidered the face onto the body.  Oops.

head of notalien

It was my first time embroidering really, it came out funky but alright.  Here he is posing in front of our Cowboy Bebop wallscroll.

So since I had to make the face a body I added a few more rows of KFB and twice the rows of straight knitting.  Also I accidently turned him inside out and left it that way after  the embroidery so his body is WS!

I have to say, this was another super easy pattern, no seaming which is a mega-plus in my book.  Check out all of her patterns, they are so cute and simple.

DH really wanted me to add bunny ears but I like the way he looks armless and legless.  So I made him a scarf out of leftover Vanna’s Choice chocolate and mustard.  I think a hat may be in order as well.

I stuffed him with leftover scraps of yarn, which worked much better than I thought it would.  I’m going to start two more today, for my boys.  I want to have a present for them when they come visit me and their new sister in the hospital.

I just love Star Wars. It was the first movie I ever saw (of course I was a month old at the time). We used to play that our bikes were millenium falcon and that stinky kid we didn’t like was Darth Vader. I was Princess Leia, of course, being the only girl in our group of friends.

My boys, now 8 and 6, beg to watch Star Wars. They learned to play chess with Star Wars Chess. The first toy we got for Evie was Darth Tater. I desperately want the AT-AT stroller. You the see the trend, right?

So I got the crazy idea to make a baby bonnet for Evie that looked like Princess Leia. As I lie awake at night wishing for sleep these are the strange things that go through my head. A few days later and we have her Princess Leia Baby Bonnet.

Modeled by the ever helpful but unfortunately not baby-sized helper monkey.

Pattern: My Own, I’ll try to write it out if anyone is interested.

Yarn: Vanna’s Choice in chocolate. Since it was a trial I don’t mind using leftover acrylic yarn.

Needles: Size 6 straights and size 4 DPNs for the buns.

I used ribbon to tie it, but I think I’d prefer an i-cord.

My husband asked what I was making last night. When I told him, he just rolled his eyes. Of course, he’s the one who hasn’t stopped wearing this, even in 100+ degree weather.

Pregnancy News: Still waiting to hear about the blood test results. I had high blood pressure and swelling, so we did more tests. I called today and they were going to look for the results. I guess if they were worried they’d be a little more… worried? It’s a 4 day weekend for them, so I hope everything was alright. I guess we will find out tuesday morning at our 38 week appointment. Edit: the receptionist called just as I got done typing. She can’t get the lab on the phone. I tell her about my very swollen hands and feet and that I’m a tad worried, she’s going to try again to get someone on the phone cause they haven’t gotten the results. We shall see.

I’ve been getting migraines for as long as I can remember.  At least the last 15 years.  But they’ve never been as often as during this pregnancy.  Evidently thats fairly common, what with all the hormones and such.  I get them daily.  Most times I can work around them and ignore them.  Saturday night I felt a great one coming.  By Sunday afternoon I was crosseyed and crying in pain.  When it gets bad my doctor sends me into the ER for a shot.  What shot depends on the doctor there at the time.  Some use Demerol, others Morphine, others still use Stadol.  Then there’s the anti-naseau shot, and that varies too.  Last night was a demerol/zofran combo.  Zofran is so much better than phenergan for me, phenergan sometimes induces restless legs and there isn’t much worse than doped up and restless legs.  You are almost asleep but for the restless legs.  It’s annoying and frustrating.

I don’t know why but this shot woke me up.  Almost hyper.  Yet still asleep.  To make matters worse I only got 3 or 4 hours sleep and my head is still killing me.  I think I slept less last night than normally.  With a shot!  Frustrating.  Maybe I’ll get some sleep today.  I still feel awful dopey and exhausted.  Plus the migraine.  Fun.

My 36 week appointment is tomorrow.  We’d talked about doing an ultrasound this week since the baby was measuring big at the last one and the boys were both almost 9 pounds 2 weeks early.  Between this and all these migraines I’m hoping we’ll induce in 2 weeks.  That would be perfectly ok with me.  More than ok.

Also I get to have a pedicure tomorrow.  It’s not something I normally do but at this point when I can barely see my feet, and knowing they are going to be up in stir-ups soon, I think it will be nice to have a flash of color.

Today is the boys’ first day at their new school.  They are super excited.  Andrew’s step-mom is his first grade teacher.  It will be interesting to see how that goes.  Zane is in 3rd grade and there are two other boys with glasses this year in his class.  He finds that very exciting.  I am very encouraged by the parents and students I’ve met so far.  After a fairly disasterous year at their old school, for both of them, I have high hopes this year.

In knitting news, I have been searching around for what to knit next.  I dunno if it was the migraine or lack of interest but I started and frogged 4 things this weekend.  A hat, a scarf, a sweater and… something else, possibly a different hat.  Since I’m not on my regular computer but the one in DH’s office/Evie’s nursery, I figured I’d save my searches and ideas here.  It might be helpful to anyone out there that has read this far as well.

I guess it’s fairly obvious I’m trying to do baby things before Evie gets here.  Also, I hate seaming.  With a passion.  I have some Debbie Bliss baby cashmerino (or some such) that I can’t wait to use.

Also, DH has mycrazyroomate.com bookmarked.  It’s funny, this guy hates his roommate as much as I hate mine.  His is just more amusing.

DH Sean got home Monday night, sick and tired but happy to be home. Even happier when he discovered his surprise R2D2 beanie waiting for him! Doesn’t he look happy? Awwww, He wore it all day yesterday in 100 degree heat. Insane.

Andrew helped Sean put together Evie’s playpen basinette yesterday. He’s so excited, he wants his little sister now!

Now I’ve caught DH’s sinus infection. So completely miserable, and every day has been worse than the last. I’m so so sick all I want to do is lie down, but when I do, all the mucus congeals in my head and hurts and I can’t breathe and waahhh! (Hey if you can’t rant and complain on your own blog, where can you?)

Speaking of blogs, while I was taking a hot steam-your-sinuses shower this morning, I was thinking I might start a blog just for Evie, where far off family could keep tabs and such. Does anyone out there have a blog just for their babies? Care to share it? How is that working for you?

One thing helping me stay sane is the lovely pinwheel sweater. I just love this pattern and the browns and yellows are rather soothing. Plus the clover needles I got feel sooooooo much better than my old icky aluminum. I highly recommend spending the extra money and treating yourself.

I’ve almost got one sleeve done, and about 13 more rows for the body. I totally did it out of order, cause I thought I was done with the body. Luckily I hadn’t done the binding off yet, cause I was confused on the Loopy edge. Still am actually.

Bonus photo: Here’s me in my sick 8 month pregnant glory. Sean snuck a photo in and the green light that comes on for auto focus is so incredibly bright, I thought the rapture had come! Nice goofy photo.

Here it is, in all it’s glory! Yes, I look goofy. The pattern is a combination of a craftster and megaknits pattern. I also used white instead of the called-for grey. Grey just doesn’t look right to me.

It’s too big for my head, which is great since it’s for my husband. I wanted to get it done while he is out of town and he will be home in about 2 hours so good timing! I just need to stick it on his head and see if I need to pick up even more stitches for his huge head before I seam it up.

Now I need to make one for me and the boys!

The yarn was Vanna’s Choice – I’m no yarn snob!  And this was nice to work with actually – except the red which was just some scrap yarn.  I’d say this took about 20ish hours to do.

This was my second attempt at this hat actually. The first one was a complete disaster. My first attempt at intrasiam and I failed miserably. I also tried to knit it entirely in the round. I also used random yarns of different ply and size.

It doesn’t even fit helper monkey! It came out lumpy and misshapen.

So it was definitely time to restart and do it the way it’s called for in the pattern. Here’s the restart.

So far so good! The little red eye looks like a heart for some reason.

Sophie certainly approves.

The mess of the back. My gosh, that was a lot of seaming up lose ends. Something tells me most people do it differently or no one would ever change colors.

In other knitting news…

I went and got the needles for the pinwheel sweater. While at the LYS I couldn’t resist this yarn. It was on sale! Time to CO the pinwheel sweater and count the minutes till DH gets home!
